New Resource Helps the Industry Combat Rising $6.6B Freight Fraud Threat

Despite growing awareness, the industry’s resources to prevent fraud remain scattered. The NMFTA has launched a centralized industry resource designed to bring freight fraud education, prevention strategies, and operational best practices into one place.

Alexandria, VA, March 5, 2026 – The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) announced the launch of its Freight Fraud Prevention Hub, a new industry resource designed to help shippers, carriers, third-party logistics providers (3PLs), brokers, technology providers, and other logistics stakeholders better educate, detect, and prevent the growing threat of freight fraud.

As of October 2025, $6.6 billion is the annual cost of freight fraud to the U.S. transportation industry according to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). According to CargoNet’s annual analysis, the average value per theft rose to $273,990, up 36 percent from $202,364 in 2024.

Freight Fraud Tactics Get More Sophisticated

Freight fraud continues to evolve in sophistication, impacting supply chain efficiency, safety, and trust. The Freight Fraud Prevention Hub serves as a centralized destination for educational content, practical tools, and timely insights focused on carrier identity, impersonation risks, and fraud-prevention best practices.

“As freight fraud continues to rise across the industry, education and verification are critical,” said Joe Ohr, chief operating officer for NMFTA. “The Hub reflects the industry’s commitment to protecting the integrity of carrier identification and supporting the entire supply chain with clear, actionable resources.”

The Freight Fraud Prevention Hub launch coincides with NMFTA’s SCAC Verified campaign. While the recent launch of SCAC Verified strengthens carrier identity verification, the Hub provides the industry with education, tools, and best practices to detect and prevent fraud across the supply chain.

Providing Freight Fraud Prevention Tools

The Hub currently offers:

  • Freight Fraud Prevention Best Practices to help organizations reduce risk.
  • “Fraud Basics” educational content explaining how fraud works, and how it impacts the transportation system.
  • Expert webinars and insights with industry leaders sharing real-world fraud trends and prevention strategies.
  • Ongoing insights and partner contributions to help organizations stay ahead of emerging fraud threats.

Freight fraud cannot be solved in silos. Preventing it requires a shared industry response. Industry organizations are invited to join the Freight Fraud Prevention Hub Partner Program and collaborate with peers to share expertise, insights, and strategies to combat freight fraud.
