Good Works

  • J.B. Hunt Transport Services awarded $55,000 to 55 classrooms as part of its Adopt-a-Class program, which provides schools with resources to obtain learning supplies and other essentials.
  • Atlanta-based Americold and Feed the Children worked with the Mayor’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs-Welcoming Atlanta to distribute 8,000 ready-to-eat meal kits to students throughout December 2022 at various community resource events.
  • Wabash partnered with Feeding America to donate $150,000 to mobile food pantries that serve communities where Wabash facilities are located.
  • South Carolina Ports’ 2023 Community Giving Program granted $252,500 in total to 90 community organizations and nonprofits throughout South Carolina, including Lowcountry Food Bank (below). Recipients are dedicated to community outreach and entrepreneurial development.

M&A

  • The CMA CGM Group acquired Global Container Terminals’ Bayonne and New York terminals, which will operate as multi-user facilities.
  • In a deal covering 30 locations across 15 states, Bluejay Capital acquired Best Warehousing and Transportation.
  • ContainerPort Groups’ parent company, World Group, purchased Pacific Cascade, an asset-light 3PL services provider. The deal includes Pacific Cascade Distribution and Pacific Cascade Trucking, both headquartered in Sumner, Washington.
  • Alba Wheels Up acquired KSI, a provider of customs brokerage services in California’s Bay Area. KSI focuses on customs clearance for the biotech and semiconductor industries.

Up the Chain

  • Boeing Commercial Airplanes named Ihssane Mounir as its senior vice president of global supply chain. Mounir previously served as Boeing’s senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing.
  • Evans Distribution Systems welcomed Scott Vanderpool as its new warehouse operations manager. Vanderpool oversees operations for the 3PL’s Mt. Elliott, Detroit, facility.

Sealed Deals

  • Apparel company Gymshark is turning to DSV for international multimodal transport solutions. The 3PL will consolidate shipments under one forwarder from nine manufacturers to distribution centers in the UK, Belgium, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
  • As it readies for its spring 2023 relaunch following bankruptcy in 2020, retailer Century 21 tapped Fillogic to assist with e-commerce and store-based fulfillment, reverse logistics/returns, forward-staging inventory, and final-mile delivery.
  • Manufacturing company Miele selected 2PL Advisors to provide transportation advisory services and conduct its 2023 less-than-truckload and truckload bid process in the United States.
  • DHL Supply Chain will lead operations for fashion retailer boohoo group’s first distribution center in the United States—located in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. The 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center is expected to open in early 2023 and will offer next-day service to the New York City metro area.
  • The Volkswagen Group chose Ivalua’s procurement software platform to digitize its global indirect procurement processes across its entire brand portfolio—including 120 production plants in 19 European countries and 10 countries in the Americas, Asia, and Africa.
  • University of Miami Health System implemented Tecsys’ Elite Healthcare platform to power the University Distribution Center’s (UDC) consolidated supply chain operations. Tecsys software centralizes logistics operations and enables data-driven analytics for the UDC.

Green Seeds

  • Gebrüder Weiss committed to gradually reducing its carbon footprint by 10% per year to zero emissions by 2030. To that end, the company will examine CO2 emissions at each of its 180 locations.
  • Upping its original order of 60, Schneider will now purchase 92 Class 8 battery-electric vehicles from Daimler Truck North America for use at its intermodal operations in Southern California.
  • Lufthansa Cargo began using lighter transport nets to secure cargo pallets. The company says the new nets, made of a special fiber, save more than 50% in weight when compared with conventional nets, which reduces CO2 emissions.

Recognition

  • Ken Kellaway, co-founder, president, and CEO of RoadOne IntermodaLogistics, received the Containerization and Intermodal Institute’s Connie Award, which honors those who invest in and drive global containerization and intermodalism.
  • For the third consecutive year, the Women In Trucking Association named Averitt Express as one of its Top Companies for Women to Work for in Transportation. Averitt Express also was named a Military Friendly Employer by Viqtory, a veteran-owned small business that connects the military community to employers.
  • Savage, a global provider of industrial logistics infrastructure, earned the 2023 Gold Military Friendly Employer designation for its commitment to recruiting, retaining, and advancing veterans. Savage has received this recognition for five consecutive years.

Shovel Ready

  • Refrigerated warehouse company Interstate Warehousing began constructing a facility on a 92-acre site in Kingman, Arizona. The first phase includes a 273,000-square-foot freezer facility that will house more than 30,000 pallet positions and feature turret trucks running in narrow aisles.
  • The City of Rochelle, Illinois and the Greater Rochelle Economic Development Corporation broke ground for an intermodal container yard in the industrial park at the Rochelle Intermodal Transload Center. The container yard is served by the City of Rochelle Railroad.

M&A

  • Norfolk Southern Railway agreed to acquire nearly all of Cincinnati Southern Railway’s assets, including a rail line covering about 337 miles and 9,500 acres.
  • Trimble purchased Transporeon, a cloud-based transportation management software platform, for $2.01 billion. Transporeon’s platform provides modular applications for a global network of 145,000 carriers and 1,400 shippers and load recipients.
  • Werner Enterprises closed on its acquisition of Reed Transport Services and RTS-TMS, operating as ReedTMS Logistics. ReedTMS is an asset-light logistics provider and truckload carrier offering freight brokerage and truckload solutions.
  • As its fifth acquisition in 2022, PS Logistics bought Clays Transport and Clays Logistics, an interstate trucking and brokerage company specializing in flatbed shipping in the Southeast United States. The acquired companies operate under the Clays Logistics brand.
