Flipkart, an online electronics retail company owned by Walmart, is working to increase sustainability across its supply chain. The e-tailer has already reduced its usage of single-use plastic by 25% across its packaging value chain. By 2021, it hopes to achieve 100% recycled consumption.

Flipkart also filed for EPR (extended producer responsibility), a policy under which producers are given significant environmental responsibilities to improve the life cycles of their goods. This includes the treatment and post-consumer disposal of products.

In an effort to be proactive, the e-tailer has already started implementing steps that are part of a longer-term sustainability plan. The company’s current initiatives include using eco-friendly paper shreds, replacing poly pouches with recycled paper bags, and replacing bubble wraps and airbags with carton waste shredded material.

“Creating alternatives for single-use plastic packaging is one of the significant steps we have taken towards fulfilling our commitment to create a sustainable ecosystem.” says Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy of the company’s sustainability goals. “Our long-term vision is to eliminate the use of plastic and maximize the use of recycled and renewable materials.”
